San Francisco 49ers superstar running back Christian McCaffrey had good news on Monday. His 21-day practice window was activated by the team, meaning that he will be available to practice for three weeks while still on injured reserve.
After this period, the 49ers have a decision to make. They'll have to either activate him to the 53-man roster or keep him on the injured reserve for the remainder of the 2024 season. However, teams usually only activate the 21-day window when they are sure their players will be within the timeline to return.
He's dealing with bilateral Achilles tendinitis. But his return to practice is a sign that things are moving well.
Christian McCaffrey Injury Update: What happened to 49ers RB?
McCaffrey was a surprise addition to the inactive list right before the San Francisco 49ers' Week 1 game against the New York Jets. It was reported that he suffered an Achilles problem and would miss the game, but later, the injury concerns became more serious.

He has not played for the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 season yet.
Before Week 9, when the 49ers did not play due to a bye week, head coach Kyle Shanahan offered an update that eased some of the concerns for the fans:
"He's had no setbacks so it looks like we're on track, but he's going to hit it hard this week while we're gone and simulate some practice stuff for himself," Shanahan said. "As long as it all goes good, hopefully we'll get him back in practice next week."
The next game for the San Francisco 49ers is against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 10. If McCaffrey is activated to the 53-man roster, fantasy owners will have the opportunity to finally start him. But given there's no clarity about his status for the game yet, managers should hold off on the RB for now.
Christian McCaffrey's 2023 stats
He was a superstar the previous season, with 1.459 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns to go with 564 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
He was named to the Pro Bowl and First-Team All-Pro, and finished third in the MVP vote while winning the Offensive Player of the Year award.
