Christian McCaffrey's long-awaited return to the field happened in Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The running back suffered from tendinitis on both of his Achilles tendons and missed half of the season, before finally making his debut this Sunday.

Understandably, there was still a bit of rust on his play, but he quickly became the most-featured player on the offense. He played 25 out of 29 snaps in the first half and was the only running back to run a route for the team. Jordan Mason, who started for the team in his place, had just one carry.

His influence on the offense was notable. In the first half alone he had 10 touches, as Kyle Shanahan did not try to ease his prized asset into the game.

Although he did not find the end zone during Sunday's game, McCaffrey's efficiency was on display. Some of the athletic plays the running back made were sorely missed by the team, who is still to find its gear in the 2024 season.

One of the plays that proved how the offense missed him happened midway through the fourth quarter when he ran a wheel route out of the backfield and easily beat his man to allow Purdy to throw a touch pass to him. He was also able to gain more yards after the catch.

His versatility is fantastic for Shanahan's offense, and something that neither Jordan Mason nor Isaac Guerendo can do in the passing game. When he's on the field, the defense also has to account for him on many different ways.

McCaffrey finished the game with an 85.7% catch rate and his 68 yards would have made him the leading receiver for the Buccaneers. As he gains more rhythm over the next few weeks, the entire 49ers' offense should improve as a whole.
