When the fixture list was made, LSU fans would have circled the game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders to watch Joe Burrow and Jayden Daniels go head-to-head. Both are Heisman winners with the college program and it made for a compelling storyline.

However, there were more important matters to consider for NFL fans of both franchises. The Bengals came into this game with a 0-2 record, and they needed a win desperately to put their season on track. The Commanders, meanwhile, had a 1-1 record entering this game and were looking to show that they were well ahead of their expected progress this season by taking down a potential AFC contender.

This is how the action went down:

Bengals vs. Commanders game summary

The Bengals and Commanders served up a thriller with offenses dominating. Joe Burrow showed no signs of his wrist injury and his connection with Ja'Marr Chase came alive. But this Monday night was all about Commanders rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, who scored two passing touchdowns and led the team to three more rushing touchdowns and one field goal.

Cincinnati was at home and they got off to a hot start on their first drive. Joe Burrow connected with Ja'Marr Chase to put the Bengals up 7-0 with 11:37 remaining in the first quarter. But Jayden Daniels and Washington responded straight away with Brian Robinson Jr. rushing in from close range to level the scores at 7-7.

The next score belonged to the Commanders as well after Bengals kicker Ewan McPherson missed a field goal attempt. Austin Ekeler ran into the endzone to put Washington up 14-7. The Cincinnati kicker redeemed himself with a couple of field goals in the second quarter, but the Commanders got another touchdown with Jayden Daniels running into the endzone. That brought the halftime score to 21-13 for Washington at half time.

The third quarter started in the same vein with a 62-yard kickoff return setting up a touchdown drive for Jayden Daniels. The rookie quarterback got his first passing touchdown of his career, throwing to offensive lineman Trent Scott, setting up a trivia question for years to come. Joe Burrow led a touchdown drive of his own to bring the score to 28-20 with the Bengals trailing despite the reception by Andrei Iosivas.

The fourth quarter saw the Commanders attempt and succeed with a field goal attempt for the only time in the game to lead 31-20. Another touchdown by the Bengals with a failed two-point conversion, where a defensive pass interference by Jeremy Chinn on Tee Higgins was not called, made it 31-26. The action was not over yet, though, as Terry McLaurin scored on a sumptuous pass from Jayden Daniels.

Within the two-minute warning, Ja'Marr Chase combined with Joe Burrow again to bring the score to 38-33 for the Commanders and that is how it ended after they failed to recover the onside kick. This was the first game in the Super Bowl era to not feature a single punt or turnover. It left Washington sitting pretty at 2-1, whereas Cincinnati now needs to dig themselves out of a 0-3 hole.
