C.J. Stroud who won the 2023 ROTY award will be entering his second season for the Houston Texans franchise of the NFL in 2024 with Super Bowl expectations. After last year's performance which saw the Texans reach the Divisional round with a rookie QB and HC, fans and media pundits have crowned Houston as one of the best teams to enter the 2024 season, mainly due to their young superstar signal caller, Stroud. In desperate need to rebuild after parting ways with Deshaun Watson and going 3-13-1 in 2022, the Texans hired a new coach and recruited aggressively which led to one of the biggest turnarounds not only in the franchise’s history but in the league’s history as well.
The Texans' new signal caller is the most important part of this massive turn of fortunes. He has had a stellar 2023 season where he passed over 4,000 passing yards and a healthy 23-5 TD-INT ratio. But this should come as no surprise for those who have followed the career of this young 22-year-old from earlier. Although he was initially regarded as an average three-star recruit, he finished his high school football career as the third-highest-ranked signal caller in his class.
C.J. Stroud Draft
Stroud is part of the 2023 NFL Draft which was held in Union Station, Kansas City, Missouri from April 27-29, 2023. Stroud was selected second overall in the draft by the Houston Texans just missing out on the number one spot which went to his friend - Bryce Young.
Stroud was also the second quarterback taken off the board behind Young and was part of 4 top-tier quarterbacks in the draft along with Anthony Richardson and Will Levis. Before the Carolina Panthers made their selection with the number one overall pick, there was a lot of uncertainty with whom they would select with many experts believing it could have been Stroud as well.
Other players who have had a great rookie year in the 2023 NFL season from this draft class include linebacker - Will Anderson Jr., cornerback - Devon Witherspoon, wide receivers Puka Nacua, and Zay Flowers, tight end Sam LaPorta, and more.
C.J. Stroud College
The California native, Stroud decided to attend one of the finest programs in college football by going to Ohio State University. In his three years at Ohio State, Stroud redshirted his true freshman year behind Justin Fields.
In 2021, Stroud assumed starting duties for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team and had a lights-out year throwing for 4,435 yards with 44 touchdowns against only 6 interceptions. He led the team to a 10-2 record and broke school and Rose Bowl records with 573 passing yards and 6 passing touchdowns.
In 2022, Stroud continued to dominate with similar TD-INT numbers as his previous campaign. He led the team to an 11-2 record on the back of 3,688 passing yards and finished the year third in the Heisman Trophy voting.
C.J. Stroud NFL Rookie Season
Stroud’s rookie season in the NFL could not have gone any better. He took the league by storm and was mainly responsible for the big turnaround that had taken place in Houston. Within no time, Stroud found an instant connection with receivers Nico Collins and fellow rookie, Tank Dell as well as tight end Dalton Schultz.
Stroud for his part has almost put no foot wrong taking to the professional league as if he is a veteran signal caller with plenty of experience under his belt. He led the league in passing yards per game with 273.9. He also set multiple rookie quarterback records including the most passing yards in a single game by a rookie when he threw for 470 yards against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
