The Cleveland Browns, or the factory of sadness, have been a quarterback graveyard as long as anyone can remember. In a division where signal callers like Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow aren't going anywhere for at least the next 7-8 years, the Browns can’t hinge on Deshaun Watson to find his form from his Houston days, or believe a 40-year-old Joe Flacco, who is way past his prime can be a long term answer.
The team that was in contention window just a few years back set themselves back at least half a decade by giving the fully guaranteed contract to Deshaun Watson. In hindsight, Browns would be cursing themselves with the way Baker Mayfield is performing since finding a home in Tampa, while Watson looks like a shell of his former self.
Quarterback favored by the Cleveland Browns after the 2025 NFL Draft

The Browns fans might not be ecstatic to hear it, but it’s looking more and more possible that former Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco might once again take snaps under center for Cleveland in 2025 as Watson nurses his way back from the Achilles injury he suffered during the 2024 season. While taking a flyer on signal callers in later rounds is not out of the question, it still doesn’t warrant a rookie quarterback beating Joe Flacco by the start of the season. By making Myles Garrett the highest-paid defensive player (as of April 2025) and Stefanski sitting on thin ice with only one playoff appearance since the departure of Baker Mayfield, all signs indicate that Cleveland is in a win-now mode. It’s more likely that the Browns go after a developmental quarterback in later rounds than take most pro-ready signal caller in Shedeur Sanders at 2nd overall.
Who is in the play at No.2 overall?
According to many draft experts, there are only 2-3 clear-cut blue-chip prospects in the upcoming draft. They are edge rusher Abdul Carter, two-way phenom Travis Hunter, and running back Ashton Jeanty. Cleveland is likely to go after Carter or Hunter rather than take a QB with No.2 overall. One other scenario is them trading down if they get an offer that they can’t refuse.
