The list of quarterbacks to etch phenomenal college careers followed by a mediocre NFL tenure is very few. However, no name stands as prominently in recent history quite as Colt McCoy.
Born on September 5th, 1986, in Hobbs, New Mexico, before he shifted to Texas for his high school career. He became a legendary high schooler, still firmly in the top 5 of most state-wide categories, before he chose the University of Texas close by for his collegiate career.
During his four-year tenure, he won the MVP award for his team each year. His tenure at the collegiate level remains as impressive as any player in collegiate history.
After redshirting his freshman year, McCoy became a starter for the team in 2006, starting a legendary run. He broke the single-game and single-season touchdown record for the school and tied the all-time NCAA freshman record. The last three games of the season remain historic for McCoy as he returned from multiple injuries each time with the last one resulting in X-ray, MRI, and CAT scans due to the nature of the injury that resulted in a pinched nerve in the neck. However, he returned for the Alamo Bowl, where he set the NCAA record. He was named the Big 12 Player of the Year. A disappointing sophomore year led many to wonder if he was a one-hit-wonder.
However, Mccoy returned with renewed vigor and led the Longhorns to 8 straight victories to start off the season. During the process, he said school records for career touchdowns, season touchdowns, and most touchdowns by a Texas player. Moreover, he also became the winningest player, setting the record for most career wins and most career passing yards. He won Offensive Player of the Game for his performance in the Fiesta Bowl and was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
His final season saw Colt lead the team to a perfect record, including a Big 12 championship win. While he was forced to miss most of the PCS national championship game, he finished his collegiate career with a 45-8 record.
Unfortunately, McCoy's NFL career did not pan out as anticipated. Instead, he has been relegated to backup duties for most of his career. Now, towards the end of his time in the league, nothing short of a miracle could change the script.
Colt McCoy’s Age
As of August 2023, Colt McCoy is 36 years old, just a week shy of celebrating his 37th birthday.
Before his NFL career began, McCoy was among the greatest players in college football history. However, a lack of “NFL height” led to him spending the majority of his career as a backup. While his name in college football is immortalized, his place in the NFL has been littered with sporadic appearances throughout the years.
