The Washington Commanders announced their decision to release QB Carson Wentz yesterday.
Washington only acquired Wentz during the 2022 NFL offseason, giving up a 2nd and 3rd round draft pick to grab him from the Indianapolis Colts.
The player struggled with his third team in three years, passing for just 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions in eight starts. He dealt with injuries throughout the year, and the Commanders looked better with Taylor Heinicke at QB.

Carson Wentz potential landing spots NFL XFL
#1 Orlando Guardians
If Carson Wentz is more desperate for game-time than being in the NFL, he may look to switch over to the newly-formed XFL.
The DC Defenders, just up the road from the Washington Commanders, may be in the market for a QB. Through two games, they’re yet to register a passing touchdown, focusing instead on the run game.
He could come into the facility and immediately improve the roster and quarterback room, which currently has no NFL experience.
#2 New York Jets
The New York Jets are in the market for a QB in 2023, with Zach Wilson and Mike White seemingly not the answer for the team.
They have a solid offensive core, with studs like Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall, and seem to be a quarterback away from becoming a truly competitive franchise.
They’ve been linked to both Derek Carr and Aaron Rodgers, but Wentz will be available on much better financial terms. Perhaps not the long-term answer for NY, Wentz is an immediate upgrade on what the Jets already have.
#3 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Perhaps the best chance Carson Wentz has of remaining an NFL starter is if he signs with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Following the retirement of Tom Brady, Kyle Trask is the only recognizable quarterback on the Buccaneers’ roster. Tampa also doesn’t select until 19th-overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, seemingly too far back for the top QB prospects. This move would make sense for all parties.
