Courtland Sutton is, for the first time in his career, contending for a playoff spot. Ever since he was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the second round in 2018, he has had to contend with a carousel of quarterbacks who have been either disappointing or terrible.
Not anymore, at least for now. In 2024, he has been working with uber-rookie Bo Nix, who has been elevating the veteran wideout's game. Case in point: For the first time, the one-time Pro Bowler has scored double-digit touchdowns in his career.
With that being said, a first-ever playoff appearance is the goal. And on Thursday, Sutton and the Broncos visited the Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium looking to get January football booked for the first time since the Peyton Manning era. How did he fare?

Courtland Sutton's stats tonight
This is how Courtland Sutton fared against the Chargers:
- Receptions/targets: 5/6
- Receiving yards: 50
- Touchdowns: 0
It was a tale of squandered opportunities for him and the team, as they blew a seemingly commanding eleven-point lead. A hot start ultimately fizzled out, as the Broncos allowed two passing touchdowns from Justin Herbert, negating the interception that they got out of him earlier.
But back to Sutton. He played admirably well, but he was not even the second-best receiver of the game. That would be his teammate Marvin Mims, who nabbed three of five targets for 62 yards. And yet, neither of them was responsible for the Chargers’ touchdowns, which instead came from Devaughn Vele and Michael Burton.
The run game was also mostly non-existent. Despite scoring the game’s first touchdown, Audric Estime failed to crack even 50 yards. Primary starter Javonte Williams fared much worse, covering only 24, though he did catch seven of eleven targets in the air for 29.
Meanwhile, on defense, linebackers Jonathon Cooper and Nik Bonitto were held sackless, with Drew Sanders and Dondrea Tillman instead being responsible for taking down Herbert. Zach Allen, however, was their most productive pass-rusher with four QB hits.
The Broncos still have at least two chances to hit 10 wins: at the Cincinnati Bengals next week and against the Kansas City Chiefs in the season finale.
