The Dallas Cowboys are the wealthiest team in the sports landscape. Let’s dive further into the world’s richest team’s logo and uniform history.
The Evolution of the Dallas Cowboys Logo
The team was first named Dallas Steers and then Dallas Rangers for a short time. However, the organization changed the name to Cowboys in 1960 to avoid confusion with another major baseball team. The league’s most famous logo has gone through very minimal iterations throughout Cowboys history. The credit for crafting the team's navy blue Lone Star logo goes to Jack Eskridge, who was Cowboys equipment manager during that time. The logo was made keeping in mind that it represents Texas as ‘The Lone Star State’ in it. The current logo has not seen any changes since 1964, when it was updated slightly by adding an outline to the original logo.
“1960” - Original Logo
“1964” - Today’s Logo
The only change that was ever made in the logo was a slight tweak at the border of the star. Jack Eskridge added white color along the border to give the logo a little more 3D appearance. The most updated version has a navy blue star consisting of white and navy blue outlines.
“Dallas Cowboys” Alternative Symbols
Dallas also used an alternate logo in the 60s decade. It showed a cowboy carrying a football on the horse with a Dallas Cowboys helmet with the stallion facing to the left. This logo was used from 1960-1970 and had the same color scheme as the Cowboys one i.e. navy blue and white. Another alternate logo was used by the team for 4 seasons from 1966-1969 which was the same as the other one but had the stallion facing in the right direction. The other change was that the horse's color was red and black color was added to the mix.
“Dallas Cowboys” Anniversary Emblems
Special versions of logos are designed to mark the team's anniversary and the Cowboys have done it twice in their storied history. The first anniversary logo came out when the team celebrated its silver jubilee. For their 25th anniversary, Dallas incorporated three stars into their design along with the team's full name and words “Silver Season”.
The second logo was created to mark the team's 40th anniversary logo. It had a star decorated with a ribbon with several inscriptions made with different typefaces.
“Dallas Cowboys” Helmet Design
Before standing firm on the current helmet design, Cowboys had some different shades of gray on their helmet.
1960 - 1963
During their initial year, the team used white as the main color with the original navy blue logo on both sides of the helmet. It also had a navy blue and gray decorative element which ran through the center of the helmet.
1964 - 1966
This was the first time gray became the main color in helmet design. A silverish-gray shade was used for the first time with a new logo design which had a white outline on the star. The decorative element that ran through the middle now had white in it along with navy blue.
1967 - 1975
During this period only the star logo changed a bit. The navy blue outline was added along with the already present white border on the star.
1976
Only the center of the helmet was changed during that year with a red color added to the left strip which made a red, white and blue tricolor.
1977 - Present
The helmets from 1967 came back once again however with a slight change in gray color. The gray used was of a darker tone and all the other things were left untouched.
“Dallas Cowboys” Uniform History
This has been the team’s look since 1966 and has seen little to no change until the present.
1960 - 1963
When the Cowboys made their debut in the league, they had the same current look except both sleeves were white in blue jerseys with the star logo on it. In white jerseys, both shoulder sleeves were of blue color with stars on them. The star logo used was plain navy blue during those 4 years.
1964 - 1965
The Cowboys got rid of both the stars on the shoulder sleeves of their jerseys while introducing three stripes on that place. Other than that no major changes were made.
1966- Present
Dallas changed their jersey strip to two from three in 1966 and that look has not changed until the present day. Other than that they introduced one set of alternate uniforms which they have been wearing since mid mid-1990s with slight tweaks here and there. The alternate uniform consists of an all-white jersey and pants with navy blue font. The lettering in this jersey is on the sleeves instead of the shoulder. The helmet has a similar look to 1960 as white is the main color on it.
