Derrick Henry came into this game for the Ravens against the Eagles in Week 13 of the 2024 NFL season engaged in a battle royale with Saquon Barkley for who was the best running back in the league. But beyond their personal battle, this was a crucial match for both teams.

The Ravens were 8-4 coming into this game. The Steelers were one game ahead at 9-3 after their victory over the Bengals. Therefore, Baltimore knew that they needed to get a win here to equal Pittsburgh in the win column and then hope that they lost next week when they are on a bye.

For the Eagles, they knew that the Washington Commanders had won earlier in the day and were one game behind them with an 8-5 record. A victory here would take them to 10-2 and have them two games ahead in the NFC East and also put them a game short of the Lions in the NFC overall.

With so much riding on this game in Week 13, Derrick Henry knew he had to have a perfect game to lead the Ravens to a victory over the Eagles. This is how he fared.

Derrick Henry was kept quiet by the Eagles' defense throughout their match as the visitors came away with a crucial win in Week 13. Much was made of the Ravens' league-leading rush defense but Vic Fangio has done an amazing job as the defensive coordinator in Philadelphia.

He had no big plays and was pretty much anonymous except for a long catch in the first half and a long rushing attempt later on in the same drive, which yielded the first Baltimore touchdown of the game. It must have stung the Ravens' running back to see Saquon Barkley reach three digits on the ground and score a touchdown.

Derrick Henry did not get close to the endzone and both of Baltimore's touchdowns, quite uncharacteristically, came from Lamar Jackson passes. Even the quarterback did not have a rushing touchdown today, which is what one expects when the defense is committed to stopping Derrick Henry. It showed that the Eagles had stopped the run as a unit.

Perhaps the most emblematic play of the whole night came in the fourth quarter. After shackling the Ravens' running back from gaining big yards except for their first touchdown drive in the first quarter, one would have expected the Philadelphia defense to tire. Instead, rookie Cooper DeJean came down from the secondary to the line of scrimmage to flatten Derrick Henry on a catch, which is a sight one does not often see.

The Baltimore rushing star still finished with over 100 yards from the line of scrimmage. His average yards per carry on the ground was 4.3 when the game ended, which is something many running backs will be happy with. But the expectations are always high when Derrick Henry is involved.

Given how important this game was for both teams, one expected a virtuoso performance from him, especially since they were playing at home. However, he and his colleagues disappointed their fans and the Ravens are now left with a mountain to climb if they are to win the AFC North. The Steelers could go two ahead of them by next week when Baltimore has its bye and it is looking more likely than ever that they will have to go on the road in the playoffs.
