Drake Maye, a quarterback for the New England Patriots, was selected third overall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. He was born on August 30, 2002, in Huntersville, North Carolina. He became the first quarterback to lead the Panthers in rushing and throw three touchdown passes in his first start since at least 1950, and his three touchdowns were one more than Brissett's five 2024 starts. As of November 2024, he had started seven of his eight games and completed 148 of 226 passes for 1,458 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and 21 sacks, giving him a 2-5 record.

Maye transferred to Myers Park High School following his first year at William A. Hough High School in Cornelius, North Carolina. He was named the 2022 ACC Football Player of the Year after joining the North Carolina Tar Heels in 2021. In a single season, he set school records for both passing yards and touchdowns and led the NCAA in total yards. He passed for more than 400 yards against Miami, Campbell, and Syracuse in 2023. He ran for 449 yards and nine touchdowns and passed for 3,608 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning him a spot on the second-team All-ACC. He finished his career fourth in UNC history in terms of passing touchdowns (63) and fifth in terms of passing yards (8,018).
