Drew Brees was announced as an interim assistant coach at his alma mater, Purdue, the school announced Thursday. The legendary NFL quarterback will help the Boilermakers (8-5) play LSU (9-4) in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 2.
The 43-year-old Brees will now work alongside student-athletes as well as possibly participate in recruiting. As the former quarterback is now prepared to enter the football world again, we revisit Brees' college and NFL records.

Before his 20-year NFL career, Brees made a name for himself while playing at Purdue from 1997 to 2000. During his four years, the quarterback set 13 Big Ten records, including marks for pass completions, attempts and yards as well as touchdown passes and total offensive yards (12,693).
Brees, inducted to the school's athletic hall of fame in 2009, racked up a staggering total of 11,792 passing yards, 90 touchdowns and 45 interceptions. He had an astonishing passer rating of 135.2 as he completed 1,026 of his 1,678 passes.
Brees also tied an NCAA record with a 99-yard pass to Vinny Sutherland against Northwestern on Sept. 25, 1999. Plus, he held the NCAA record for pass attempts in a game (83) for 15 years, until Washington State quarterback Connor Halliday broke it with 89 in October 2013.
What NFL records does Drew Brees hold?
Brees was picked by the San Diego Chargers in the 2001 NFL draft. He spent five years with the AFC West franchise and put up 12,348 yards, 80 touchdowns and 53 interceptions in 59 games. Brees had a 30-29 record with the Chargers before joining the New Orleans Saints in 2006.
Over the course of his 15-year Saints career, Brees had a 151-94 (including playoffs) record as the starting quarterback, guiding them to 10 playoff appearances. He won seven division titles and made three trips to the NFC championship game while helping New Orleans to the Super Bowl victory in the 2009 season.
Brees ended his 20-year NFL stint in 2020 and finished with a total of 80,358 passing yards and 571 touchdowns. He ranks second in NFL history in career yards passing and touchdown passes, only behind Tom Brady.
Brees holds the record for most consecutive games with a touchdown pass (54). He is also the only player with multiple 5,000-yard passing seasons (five of the league's 14). The 12-time Pro Bowler holds the record for eight consecutive seasons of completing at least 65% of his passes.
