Drue Tranquill is an American football player who plays the linebacker position for the Kansas City Chiefs franchise in the NFL. He has completed his fifth season as a professional and has bolstered the Chiefs' defense with his addition to the team just prior to the start of the 2023 NFL season.

Tranquill was born on August 15, 1995, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and has been into sports from a very young age. Initially, he was more inclined to become a baseball player and that's where he thought he would end up. However, once he started playing gridiron football, every aspect of the sport caught his attention and he immediately felt the connection.

The Indiana native has a very strong work ethic and a belief system which reflects in his game on the field. He is a natural-born leader on the team and his energetic approach to the game helps bring out the best in his teammates as well. At 29 years of age as of August 2024, Tranquill is in the prime of his career and has a chance to win back-to-back Lombardis with the Chiefs after signing three-year extension in the 2024 offseason.

Tranquill attended the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Indiana where he played on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team from 2014 to 2018. Tranquill was rated as a four-star recruit coming out of high school and had various offers in hand before he decided to go to Notre Dame.

2014 was Tranquill’s true freshman year and he got the opportunity to play in 11 games while making 3 starts. In the limited amount of game time that he received, Tranquill was still able to make important contributions to the team by recording 33 tackles - one for loss, an interception, a fumble recovery, and a blocked punt.

Tranquill’s sophomore season was a year of setbacks as he tore his ACL in just the third game of the year and had to miss the remainder of the season. As a result, he was able to redshirt on medical grounds which allowed him to play in the 2018 season.

Not to be outdone by the injury, Tranquill came back healthier and stronger in his junior year. He registered 79 tackles including two for a loss and an interception while starting all 12 games. Yet, 2017, his senior year was the best year of his college football career as he had 85 tackles of which 10.5 were for a loss. He was also extremely busy all around the field registering 1.5 sacks, three fumble recoveries, four passes defended, one interception, and one forced fumble.

Many would have expected Tranquill to declare for the 2018 NFL Draft, but he had other ideas. Wanting to give his education the same level of commitment, the Chiefs’ versatile linebacker came back to college for one more year as a graduate student in Mechanical Engineering.

Some awards and achievements of Tranquill in college include:

  • The 2014 Notre Dame Newcomer of the Year.

  • The 2016 First-team Academic All-American.

  • Notre Dame Team captain in 2017 and 2018.

  • The 2018 Wuerffel Trophy Winner.

After being drafted into the NFL by the Chargers, Tranquill showed the team what he was capable of by becoming a steady performer on the field. He naturally developed into a leader on the defensive side of the ball and improved his play within the first couple of years in the league. He became an integral performer in the run game, pass game, and pass rush.

Prior to the start of the 2023 NFL season, Tranquill’s rookie contract expired and he signed with the Kansas City Chiefs as a free agent. The former Chargers’ linebacker fit in seamlessly with his new team and picked up from where he left off with his former team. It will be exciting to see what the future holds for the Fort Wayne native as the Chiefs have locked up his services for the next three years from 2024-2027.
