Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy was the final rookie quarterback to remain unsigned. However, as revealed by ESPN's Adam Schefter on Friday, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft has now committed to a four-year, fully guaranteed contract worth $21.85 million with the Vikings. A fifth-year team option clause and a $12.71 million signing bonus are also included in the agreement.
McCarthy was among just three first-round draft selections who had not yet signed an initial agreement when he signed his deal. The other first-round picks who have yet to sign contracts are offensive tackle Amarius Mims of the Cincinnati Bengals and linebacker Dallas Turner, McCarthy's Vikings teammate.
There had been increasing anxiety regarding the lack of progress on an agreement with McCarthy with the team's training camp drawing near; however, those worries have now been allayed.
The Vikings drafted McCarthy after a very successful two years as the starting quarterback for the University of Michigan. He guided the group to a 28-1 overall record during that time, and he was a key player in the team's first national title win in 26 years last year.

McCarthy will have an advantageous start to his professional career, given the skill of the Vikings offense, which is headlined by tight end T.J. Hockenson and wide receiver Justin Jefferson.
Will JJ McCarthy be the starting quarterback with the Vikings?
The Minnesota Vikings are beginning over with a rookie first-round choice in J.J. McCarthy and a seasoned journeyman in Sam Darnold to establish a new quarterback replacement strategy after allowing experienced starting quarterback Kirk Cousins to walk in the 2024 free agency.
Darnold has enough NFL experience to provide Minnesota with a reliable quarterback option. Still, many think it won't be long before the quarterback from the University of Michigan claims the starting job.
McCarthy will have the chance to demonstrate that he is prepared to start in the league during training camp and preseason. What the two quarterbacks do during the remainder of the offseason will determine which quarterback head coach Kevin O'Connell starts in Week 1 in September.
The Vikings have already created the perfect environment for McCarthy from a roster position; the next thing to worry about is ensuring he isn't starting before he is ready to.
