Two months after signing Rashaad Penny, the Carolina Panthers placed the seasoned running back on the reserve/retired list on Tuesday. Penny's decision to retire is surprising, given that he just informed Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer that he can still rank among the NFL's top running backs.
The running back has made a respectable sum of money since making his debut in 2018. Below, we will take a look at Penny's earnings across six NFL seasons.
Rashaad Penny's career earnings
Rashaad Penny has earned $17,245,437 in his six-year NFL career, according to Spotrac.

Penny looked promising during his time in college, entering the league as a first-round pick in 2018. He immediately signed a rookie contract with the Seahawks. The contract was a four-year deal valued at $10.7 million. The deal also had a $5.9 million signing bonus and an annual average salary of $2.6 million.
Penny had 24 appearances with the Seahawks during his first two seasons in the league. He was incredibly efficient on the ground and managed to score five touchdowns during that period, despite not being the primary RB. Since then, injuries have plagued the years that followed for Penny.
The running back had his best season with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021, recording 119 carries for 749 yards and six touchdowns. That campaign, however, was the only one in which he registered more than 100 rushes.
Penny re-signed a one-year contract worth $5.7 million with the Seahawks in 2022 after his original four-year rookie contract expired.
The Philadelphia Eagles and Rashaad Penny reached an agreement in 2023 for a one-year contract that included a $1.35 million base pay, a $600,000 guarantee, and a maximum value of $2.1 million, per Spotrac.
It makes sense that Penny had a limited number of options as a free agent after departing the Eagles until he signed a contract with the Panthers in May. But as of today, the team placed him on the reserve/retired list, meaning his time in Carolina is officially over.
Penny rushed for 1,951 yards and 13 scores in 45 career games.
