The 49ers came into this game against the Rams in Week 15 of the 2024 NFL season knowing their season was on the line, and George Kittle was perhaps the man most entrusted with getting the San Francisco offense going. With Christian McCaffrey, Jordan Mason, Trent Williams and Brandon Aiyuk all missing on offense, the tight end was the person Brock Purdy would have to depend on.

It was a crucial matchup because the 6-7 49ers were facing the 7-6 Rams at home. Los Angeles had defeated San Francisco already once earlier in the season and there was a chance for revenge here. But more importantly, a win here would send the 49ers to a 7-7 record, which would tie them with the Rams. It would also put them one game behind the Seahawks, who currently lead the NFC West at 8-5 but have two hard clashes against the Packers and Vikings coming up.

If they were to lose this game, San Francisco would be two games below 0.500 and their playoff chances would be minimal. It would be a severe disappointment for the franchise that finished top of the NFC last year and made the Super Bowl. George Kittle needed to be at his best to avoid such an outcome. With the rain pouring down, this is how the tight end fared.

The tight end showed flashes of brilliance in the first half as both offenses struggled to get going. With conditions slippery due to rain, neither Matthew Stafford nor Brock Purdy could find any rhythm going. The first quarter featured punts after punts as both teams failed to pick up first downs.

The only point in the opening quarter came when Jake Moody kicked a field goal. It was all down to George Kittle, who set up the field position with a 33-yard catch.

It was one of the only two times he was involved in the first half going into the two-minute warning. He was targeted five times but he hauled in just those couple of receptions for 43 yards.

The second half saw the conditions improve but it was that kind of a game where defenses were not ready to relinquish their authority. The Rams defense identified George Kittle as the major threat on the 49ers' offense and kept him well-shackled. Brock Purdy just had two targets where he could find his tight end. Both were completed and were essential for continuing drives.

In his relative absence, the 49ers quarterback had to find Deebo Samuel and Ricky Pearsall. The former dropped a surefire touchdown pass and the latter was either underthrown or overthrown, including one ball that was intercepted. The connection was not the same that Brock Purdy normally has with George Kittle.

In the end, it allowed the Rams to win a close game 12-6 as neither team could score a touchdown.
