Following Austin Ekeler's exit in the offseason, the Los Angeles Chargers signed former Baltimore Ravens running backs J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards to form a two-pronged rushing attack. Dobbins was the team's primary back, while Edwards was his deputy.
However, the latter was promoted to the starting role after Dobbins suffered an MCL sprain, coincidentally, against the Ravens, in the Chargers' 30-23 loss in Week 11. Since taking over as the starter, Edwards has performed as well as the team would have expected.
In the last three games, the 29-year-old has carried the ball 24 times for 94 yards and one touchdown and caught one pass for one yard. But all would have been forgiven if he delivered a massive performance on Thursday Night Football against the Denver Broncos and helped the Chargers inch closer to earning a playoff berth. That's exactly what he did.

Gus Edwards' stats vs. Broncos on Thursday Night Football
Here are Gus Edwards' stats from the Los Angeles Chargers' 34-27 win over the Denver Broncos on Thursday Night Football:
- Rush attempts: 14
- Rushing Yards: 68
- Rushing TDs: 2
- Receptions: 1
- Receiving Yards: 3
- Receiving TDs: 0
The veteran running back scored the Chargers' first touchdown of the night, as he broke multiple tackles and punched the ball into the endzone from a yard out. It was only his fourth rushing touchdown of the season and his first since Week 11.
After going three games without finding the endzone, he did it twice in three quarters as he helped the Chargers cut the deficit to five points with a five-yard touchdown run.
Edwards finished the game with 68 rushing yards, his most prolific game of the season. He chose a great time to have his best game of the campaign, as it not only helped his team beat the Broncos but also usurp them in the AFC standings. They are now sixth in the conference standings.
If the Tennessee Titans beat the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday, it will seal the Chargers' playoff berth. However, if they don't, they can do it themselves with a win over the New England Patriots next week. If it comes to that, they'll hope Gus Edwards can recreate if not better his performance from tonight.
