Football is a dangerous sport, with NFL players always at risk of sustaining severe injuries. An NFL injury can often lead to weeks, months, or even years on the sidelines. In some cases, an injury can end a career.
Amid the constant scare that NFL injuries can lead to, no player has died due to an injury sustained in the league. In fact, there has only been one player who passed away during an NFL game since its 100-year-plus inception, and it was due to a heart attack.
Who is the only player to have died during an NFL game?
To this day, Chuck Hughes remains the only player to have died on the field during a football game. However, Hughes did not suffer any injuries in the game before he died.

Hughes, who was playing for the Detroit Lions at the time of his passing, suffered a heart attack at Tiger Stadium on October 24, 1971, in a game against the Chicago Bears.
What happened to Chuck Huges?
Hughes was on the Detroit Lions bench for the first three-quarters of their game against the Bears. However, with just 10 minutes left on the clock, the receiver came onto the field, replacing a (non-seriously) injured player.
With just over two minutes left until the final whistle, Hughes caught a pass. Then, with 62 seconds left, he collapsed on the field in front of 54,000 shocked spectators.
A team of doctors rushed over to Hughes and attempted CPR. Hughes was then stretchered off the field, and doctors attempted to revive him at the hospital before declaring him dead. Hughes was 28 years old at the time of his death.
As per reports, one of Hughes' arteries was fully clogged before he suffered a heart attack. The exertion on the field of play, however, appeared to have triggered the attack.
