The Kansas City Chiefs made a bold move to kick off the 2018 season by starting rookie quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Turns out, it was a game-changing decision. Mahomes hit the ground running in his first year as a starter, finishing the regular season with a passer rating of 113.8 from 5,097 yards and 50 TDs, to clinch the MVP award.

His achievement made him the headline of the season as the Chiefs finished their spectacular season with a 37-31 overtime loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC championship game. After the loss, Mahomes appeared on "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon," where he recounted his encounter with Brady after the game.

“So, during all the excitement of them, they won the game, and we were kind of just — walked off the field after that heartbreaking loss at home," Mahomes said. "I didn't talk to him after the game. And so, when I was kind of in the locker room, I was about to walk out, actually.
"He came in, and he got security to let him in. And he just kind of said, ‘Man, you had a heck of a season.’”

Patrick Mahomes learns firsthand about Tom Brady's big game performance

Mahomes was sensational heading into the first AFC championship game for the Chiefs in 25 years, but he was up against the experience of Tom Brady and the dominant Patriots. Although the Chiefs had a slight upper hand with a season record of 12-4 against the Patriots' 11-5, it was the big games where Brady did his magic the best. Mahomes got a firsthand experience of it, too.

“He knows what it's like to win a lot of big games," Mahomes said. "He knows what it's like to lose some big games. Not many, but a few. And so, he just said, ‘Man, you have to keep grinding.’ He said he loved the way that I played. And it was awesome for him to do that and kind of showed that class at such an exciting moment.”

Brady completed 30 of his 46 passes for 348 yards, one TD and two interceptions. He led the Patriots to 17-7 in the third quarter. The Chiefs were shocked, but Mahomes led a strong comeback from there to take the game to overtime.

Mahomes had a mixed game as he went 16 of 31 for 295 yards and three TDs, with two of them in the fourth quarter. However, Brady effectively used his experience in OT as the Patriots scored a 2-yard TD after a 75-yard drive from 13 plays to clinch a thrilling game.
