Houston Texans' addition to the league back in 2002 filled out the 32-team league which we know today. The latest franchise to be added to the NFL is one of the two teams along with the Cowboys to play in the Lone Star State. The Texans have been owned by the McNair family since their inception in the NFL.
The Texans are one of the only four teams to have never made a Super Bowl appearance in their franchise history. However, with CJ Stroud’s arrival, everything is pointing towards Texans bringing their first-ever Lombardi to Space City soon.
The Evolution of the Houston Texans Logo
The youngest franchise has only ever used one primary logo in its entire history. The logo was unveiled before the team’s inaugural season in 2002 by owner Bob McNair. The emblem was made keeping in mind that it resembles the state of Texas. It is the only logo out of all 32 teams that has never been tinkered with. The emblem was developed by a California-based firm Verlander Design.
2002 - Present - Spanish Bull Logo
The logo comprises a darker shade of the blue, red and white color palette. The logo has a split bullhead while also representing the flag of Texas. The owner mentioned that the bullhead used in the logo depicts a Spanish fighting bull. The two horns at the top create the shape of the Gulf Coast of Texas. The star is used instead of an eye on a dark blue shade which points to the 5 values the team symbolizes. That star embodies five core values of the team i.e. pride, courage, strength, tradition and independence.
Houston Texans Alternative Symbols
2006 - 2020
The alternate logo depicts alphabets H and T in capital letters. The H is in red while T is painted dark blue. Exactly below the H is the map of Texas. The white star present on the map is exactly the same as the one present in the primary logo.
2021 - 2023
Another alternate logo they used from 2020-2023 had a capital T which was dark blue in color with a red outline.
2024
The latest alternate logo is an old English H which will be featured on one of the helmets for the 2024 season. The H has a light blue and dark blue shade with a red outline. A red star is on the right side of H.
Houston Texans Anniversary Emblems
As the youngest franchise in the league, there have not been many occasions for the team to celebrate, especially when it comes to the anniversaries of the team. Houston has only celebrated one anniversary when it completed a decade in the league.
2012
The Texans celebrated a decade of its existence in the NFL in 2012. They came out with an emblem which had a large 10 as the main attraction with a ribbon passing through it in the middle. The team’s primary logo was situated exactly between the ribbon.
Houston Texans Helmet Design
The Texans have kept the same primary helmets since their inaugural season and have never changed it. However, along the way they have debuted some alternate helmets especially after the league lifted the one helmet rule 3 years ago.
2002 - Present - Primary Helmets
Houston’s primary helmet has a very simple design. Its base color is a dark blue with the Texans emblem pasted on both sides of it.
2023 - Battle Red Helmet
This helmet coincided with CJ Stroud’s rookie season and was brought to match the red jerseys of the Texans. The primary color is metallic red with Houston’s logo on both sides of the helmet.
2024 - Alternate
Both these helmets will be making their debut in the 2024 season. These helmets are part of a redesign that Houston made in the 2024 offseason. The first helmet has a navy blue base color with an old English H logo on it. The other helmet which will also make its debut in the upcoming season has bright red as its primary color. Both sides of the helmet have a horn-like black design which points to the top.
Houston Texans Uniform History
The Texans in their history had never altered their home and away jerseys until 2024. Houston went with a major rebranding in the offseason and will be wearing whole new uniforms come August 2024.
2002 - 2023
The home jerseys had a darker shade of blue which somewhat looked close to navy blue. It had one thick red stripe on both shoulders along with a red collar. The font on the chest was white with a red outline. It also had white pants which had blue and red stripes going down on both sides. The white away jersey had a thick dark blue stripe on both the shoulder and collar of the same color. The fonts were red in color with a dark blue outline.
2024 - Present
The new look of Houston has deep steel blue, battle red and white as primary colors. The home uniforms are exactly the same as the previous version except the base color is changed to deep steel blue which looks close to black. The numbers are the same as before but the thick stripes on shoulders are no longer there. Pants are white with deep still blue and red lines running down on both sides of it. The jersey also has a primary logo on both sleeves. The away jerseys are counterparts to their home jerseys. However, one major difference is that, unlike bare shoulders in the home ones, here there is a horn-like black/red design on both sides of the shoulder.
Houston Texans Alternate Uniforms
Unlike their home and away sets, Texans have worn many alternate uniforms in their franchise history.
Before 2024
Texans have worn bright red jerseys many times in their history. The shade of red varied from time to time but the aesthetics and essence of the uniform remained the same. It had a dark blue collar and thick stripes on both shoulders with white numbering. The pants were white with steel blue and red lining on both sides.
2024 - Present
The base color of the jersey remains the same as the home version but the numbers here are painted in red with a light blue outline. The wordmark H-TOWN above the numbers is light blue in color.
