The Houston Texans are a professional American football team headquartered in Houston, Texas. The Texans compete in the National Football League (NFL), as part of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division, with their home games at NRG Stadium. Bob McNair started the squad in 1999 and owned it until his death in 2018. After McNair died, ownership passed to his wife, Janice McNair, and then, in 2024, to their son Cal McNair. The Texans filled the hole left by the Houston Oilers, who moved to Nashville in 1996 to become the Tennessee Titans. The Texans entered the NFL as an expansion team in 2002, becoming the league's youngest franchise.

Throughout the 2000s, the Texans struggled on the field, but their performance improved in the 2010. They won their first division championship and playoff spot in 2011, and went on to win more AFC South titles in 2012, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2023. Despite their success, the Texans have never won a road playoff game or competed in a conference title game. Furthermore, they are one of four NFL clubs, along with the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, and Jacksonville Jaguars, that have never won a Super Bowl.

According to Forbes, the Houston Texans are worth $4.7 billion and rank twelfth among NFL teams in 2022. However, the Texas Rangers' victory in the 2023 World Series made the Texans the only major professional sports organization in Texas without a championship.

The franchise's history began in 1997, when Bob McNair made an unsuccessful attempt to bring an NHL team to Houston. Following the Oilers' departure, McNair and Steve Patterson formed Houston NFL Holdings, which acquired the 32nd NFL franchise in 1999 for $700 million. This relocation was part of an effort to balance the number of NFL franchises and return professional football to Houston.

Who owns the Houston Texans?

Cal McNair is the current owner of the Houston Texans. Cal McNair has played a prominent role with the Houston Texans since their inception. He progressed through the ranks, becoming vice chairman in 2008 and CEO in 2019, following his father's death.

His early tenure was marked by controversy. The appointment of Jack Easterby, who wielded considerable power, coincided with a number of high-profile exits. McNair was blamed for these firings, but communication failures throughout coaching and GM searches, particularly with star quarterback Deshaun Watson, resulted in a trade request and, ultimately, Watson's departure. The Texans also faced lawsuits over Watson's auctions, which they resolved.

McNair has also been chastised for using a racially offensive phrase and for the team's on-field issues. He promised to increase fan relations and has become more active in recent coaching hires. In March 2024, he took over as primary owner of the franchise, solidifying his grip.

Houston Texans Owner Net Worth

As of August 2024, the net worth of Cal McNair is unknown. But his father, Robert C. McNair’s net worth was $3.8B in 2018, as stated by Forbes.
