Up to 90 players from NFL teams arrive at training camp and put in long, intense sessions in an attempt to earn a spot on the active roster for the start of the regular season. One of the most often used terms in NFL news stories is "PUP list” whenever training camps begin each season.
PUP, which stands for Physically Unable to Perform, designates a player who is unable to practice due to any football-related injury. Players with football-related injuries who are placed on the PUP at the beginning of training camp are still considered active players.

A player may be taken off the PUP list at any time during training camp and resume practicing right away if they were placed on it prior to the commencement of camp. He is also permitted to attend team meetings and make use of the organization's facilities while on PUP during the preseason.

The player is also permitted to work out on the sidelines during practices, but he is not permitted to take part in any team training exercises, seven-on-sevens, walkthroughs, or other team activities.
There are two different kinds of PUP lists. An active PUP list is used before the regular season begins, while a reserve PUP list is used during the regular season.
Prior to the start of the regular season, players who have been added to the active/PUP list may be transferred to the reserve/PUP list during roster reductions. However, if a player is placed on the reserve/PUP list, they are not included in the active roster and are required to miss the first four regular-season games.
If at the end of the preseason a player is still on the PUP list, they need to be either traded, released or placed on the reserve/PUP list. If not, they are counted against the 53-man roster.
It is not possible for a player who has been placed on the reserve/PUP list to play during the first four weeks of the regular season. However, he can be used right away following the completion of the four games.
