How did the Washington Commanders perform in the 2022 NFL Season?
The Washington Commanders had an average to decent 2022 NFL season that saw them live up to preseason expectations. The Commanders started the season with a 28-22 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on their home turf.
That was the ideal start to the season, as their offence and defence put up stellar showings. However, that win turned out to be a flash in the pan, as the Commanders lost four straight games against the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Tennessee Titans.
In hindsight, all four losses came against teams that finished the 2022 season with positive records.
After their embarrassing four-game skid, the Commanders went on a three-game winning run against the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and the Indianapolis Colts.
Once again, this run comes with an asterisk, as the Commanders beat three teams that eventually missed the playoffs. Two of those three teams currently hold the top four spots in the 2023 NFL Draft. Well, at least a win is a win.
Next up, the Commanders took an L to the Minnesota Vikings in a close-fought fixture that ended 20-17. That loss took their record to 4-5 for the season. After the loss against the Vikings, the Commanders went on yet another winning run.
This time coming out tops against the Philadelphia Eagles, Houston Texans, and Atlanta Falcons. Their winning run ended with a tie against the New York Giants just a week before their bye week.
Following the bye week, the Washington Commanders knew that a winning run to close the season would ensure their qualification to the postseason.
So what did they do? They proceeded to drop three straight games to the Giants, San Francisco 49ers, and Cleveland Browns, a sordid run that ended their playoff hopes for good. They closed the season with a 26-6 victory over the playoff-bound Dallas Cowboys.
The Washington Commanders ended the season with an 8-8-1 record, one good enough to give them the sixteenth pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Commanders’ fans will hope that the front office strikes gold in the talent-heavy Draft class.
