The Miami Dolphins, currently owned by Stephen M. Ross, is the only American football team with a professional status that is situated in the Miami metropolitan region. In Florida's northern suburbs of Miami Gardens, Hard Rock Stadium serves as the home field for the Dolphins.

The Dolphins are Florida's first-ever pro sports franchise. The Dolphins were among the earliest pro football franchises in the southeast, along with the Atlanta Falcons. The Dolphins are the only AFC East side out of the four that is not a founding member of the AFL.

Three other American Major League Sports franchises, the Miami Heat of the NBA, the Florida Panthers of the NHL, and the Miami Marlins of MLB, are all located in the Greater Miami area.
