How is the NFL Draft selection order determined?

There are a total of 32 teams in the NFL. For every NFL draft, all the 32 teams will receive a pick for all the seven rounds. So how does a team decide when it will draft?

The NFL Draft selection order is determined by the performance of the team. The position in which an NFL team picks is opposite to the ranking they finish in the table. What it means is the team with the worst record from the previous season will get to pick first and the team with the best record, that is, Super Bowl winners, will be drafted last, i.e. 32nd.

A total of 14 teams make the NFL playoffs. 18 teams are automatically eliminated either by virtue of their win-loss record. These 18 teams will be drafting from no. 1 to no. 18 in the draft.

The picks 19-24 will be the teams that were eliminated from the Wild Card round of the playoffs. The next four draft picks in the order, from 25-28, will belong to the teams eliminated from the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

The next two picks in the draft order, 29 and 30 are the two teams eliminated from the Conference championships. The 31st draft pick will be the runners-up of the Super Bowl. And the last pick, 32nd, will be the Super Bowl Winners.

One important factor to consider in this draft order from 21-30 is that the order will be based on the team’s win-loss record from the regular season.

Other factors influencing the draft order will be the draft picks that were awarded to other teams during a particular trade, teams who trade up during the draft for better picks, and more.
