Key players to watch in the Baltimore Ravens vs. Atlanta Falcons game
The Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens are known to take preseason seriously. Here's a look at a player from each team that you should pay attention to ahead of their game:
Devin Leary, Quarterback - Baltimore Ravens
Devin Leary took fewer snaps than fellow backup quarterback Josh Johnson, but the rookie was more efficient. Leary completed 60% of his passes, but his offense couldn't move the ball adequately, thus his 37 passing yards.
However, with Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley sitting out of the Falcons’ game, you can expect Leary to take the bulk of the offensive snaps. It would be refreshing to see what Leary can do as a starter rather than the backup.
Devin Leary enjoyed a long, productive collegiate football career, appearing for the NC State Wolfpack and Kentucky Wildcats. The Baltimore Ravens picked him in round six of the 2024 NFL draft. He'll be expected to compete for the QB3 slot behind Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley.
Michael Penix Jr., Quarterback - Atlanta Falcons
Michael Penix Jr. was the surprise pick of round one of the 2024 draft. The Falcons selected Penix with the eighth overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft, even though they had signed perennial Pro Bowler Kirk Cousins to a long-term contract in the offseason. The move drew a mixture of surprise and bewilderment among the Falcons fan base.
However, fans and critics should be careful with the criticism, as Michael Penix is a solid quarterback in his own right. The 2023 Maxwell Award winner thrived during his college football career. He had 13,741 passing yards, 96 touchdowns and 34 interceptions in 49 games. He amassed a 157.1 passer rating and 146.6 passer rating for the Washington Huskies and Indiana Hoosiers.
Michael Penix enters his rookie season as Kirk Cousins' backup in Atlanta, but given Cousins' injury history, don't be surprised if he plays major minutes at the business end of the season.
