Is Dalvin Cook playing tonight? Cowboys HC reveals RB's status for Week 8 SNF vs 49ers

Dallas Cowboys fans have received major news regarding Dalvin Cook's availability for the team's Week 8 matchup. The Cowboys will have the chance to improve to 4-3 with a win against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and Cook could add necessary firepower to their struggling offense.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the team has elevated Cook to the main roster ahead of Sunday night's game at Levi's Stadium. He reportedly took first-team reps this week, which could mean he'll get touches against San Francisco.

This is terrific news for the Cowboys, whose offense ranks last in rushing yards per game (77.2) in the NFL.

Dallas has had Ezekiel Elliott as their No. 1 option in the backfield, but Rico Dowdle and Hunter Luepke have gotten touches as well.

Cook couldn't make it to a training camp and worked out in Houston with a group of trainers before signing with the Cowboys at the end of August.

After spending the first five years of his career with the Minnesota Vikings, he joined the New York Jets in 2023. But his tenure with the Jets wasn't the best, especially after Aaron Rodgers went down with a season-ending injury.

He would finish the season with the Baltimore Ravens, and then signed with the Cowboys' practice squad. Dallas hasn't had a good start to the season, boasting a 3-3 record and leaving more doubts than certainties. Their numbers could go up with Cook on the roster, but it's still too early to tell.

What did Mike McCarthy say about Dalvin Cook's availability?

Dalvin Cook was once one of the best running backs in the NFL. Injuries have bothered him in the past couple of seasons, but he's trying to get back to his best version and perhaps the Cowboys offer him the best chance to do so.

Mike McCarthy made it clear that the player is ready to go after putting in the work this week.

"I think the biggest thing for us is we're taking the full week. Dalvin is ready [to play]," Mike McCarthy said, per CBS Sports. "I really like the work that he's putting in. I think he's clearly crossed over the threshold of the communication and the understanding [of the offense]."

The stage is set for Dalvin Cook's debut and if this move works, their offense will get much-needed help on the ground.
