Njoku suffered a high-ankle sprain in the third quarter of Cleveland's season opener against the Dallas Cowboys. The tight end made a 29-yard catch-and-run but was moving gingerly after the play.
Njoku was then spotted in the medical tent before he headed to the locker room. The Browns announced that Njoku was questionable to return, but he ultimately did not play for the rest of the game. He had four catches for 44 yards before exiting the contest.
On Wednesday, Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson provided an update on Njoku and said that the team felt the absence of the tight end in the past three games.
"I think he (Njoku) a big part of this system," Watson said. "Exactly what we want to do and what we were planning to do, you know, with the start of the season, but I know he's been out for the last couple weeks, and you know, it'd be good to have him back. We'll see how this week goes, and we're definitely excited if he can make it to the game."
Earlier this week, Njoku was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Friday but did not practice in Thursday's session. As things stand, he looks set to make a return against the Commanders in Week 5.
