Deshaun Watson has been in the spotlight ahead of the Cleveland Browns' NFL preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday. The quarterback has been named Cleveland's starter for the 2024 season, but there are questions on whether Watson will play in the preseason.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Deshaun Watson will not play in Cleveland's preseason opener against the Packers on Saturday. Notably, Watson's absence is not due to injury, but rather a precaution to keep the player fully fit for the regular season.

"Yeah, so we're going to play some starters about 10 plays," Stefanski said to the media on Tuesday. "I talked to (Packers coach Matt) LaFleur, very similar to Coach LaFleur's plan.
"Some guys will not play, whether they're injured or coming back from an injury or my decision, Deshaun will not play in this game, but you will have some starters out there on Saturday night."
Since Deshaun Watson is not in the picture for Saturday's preseason game, his backup Jameis Winston will start against the Packers.
Watson's 2023 season was cut short in November when he had to undergo surgery on his right shoulder. However, he was throwing during the offseason workout program and has missed only one of the team's training camp practices thus far.
It will be interesting to see whether Watson will feature in any of the Browns' other preseason games against the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 17 and the Seattle Seahawks on Aug. 24.
