Is Joe Mixon playing on Sunday? Injury update on Texans RB for Week 3 Fantasy Football - Source: Getty

Joe Mixon suffered an ankle injury in the Houston Texans' 19-13 win over the Chicago Bears in Week 2. The 28-year-old running back was traded to the Texans this past offseason, and he signed a three-year, $25.5 million restructured contract with the team.

Mixon was off to a good start to his career with the Texans, as in two games he rushed for 184 yards and a touchdown on 39 carries, averaging 4.7 yards per carry. Unfortunately, due to his ankle injury, he could miss some time.

Mixon is currently listed as doubtful for the Week 3 game against the Minnesota Vikings, but it is unlikely that he will play on Sunday. With him and Dameon Pierce both sidelined, Cam Akers will be the Texans' starting running back.

Mixon, who spent the first seven seasons of his NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals, expressed dissatisfaction with the way he sustained his injury in Week 2. After he believed a hip-drop tackle had injured him, the running back called out the referees.

The NFL had banned the hop-drop tackle before the start of the season, and Mixon being upset is completely reasonable. Hopefully, he'll be back sooner than later, as he is crucial for the Texans' Super Bowl aspirations this season.

Update on Joe Mixon injury and status for Week 3:

As per new reports, Mixon won't be traveling with the team and is listed as out.

As mentioned earlier, both Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce will be out in Week 3. In their absence, former Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers will start for the team. Apart from him, Dare Ogunbowale is also in line to feature against the Vikings.

It will be tough for the Texans to go against a great Vikings defense without their two primary running backs. However, it will provide C.J. Stroud an opportunity to make his case stronger among the MVP candidates.

In two games this season, the Vikings' defense is giving up an average of 11.15 points and 340.5 total yards. If the Texans' offense plays well against the Vikings, then Stroud could easily become the favorite to win the MVP award since Patrick Mahomes has not started the season well.
