Is Patrick Mahomes fully healthy? An update on the quarterback's ankle and recovery progress

Super Bowl LVII - Kansas City Chiefs Media Availability

Is Patrick Mahomes' high ankle sprain a problem, given that the Super Bowl is only a day away and that he is probably the most crucial player for the Kansas City Chiefs? Undoubtedly.

Mahomes injured his ankle during the Chiefs' Divisional Round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was still able to drag them to the Super Bowl and has been using the days off to recover, though he is still far from fully fit.

He has been actively participating in practices this week while focusing on his recovery.

According to Albert Breer, coach Andy Reid has said that he can't claim Patrick Mahomes is 100%. A high ankle sprain can take up to a month to heal, but the good news for the Chiefs is that Mahoes should be in better shape than he was in his previous outing against the Cincinnati Bengals.

High ankle sprains are painful and can impair performance, but given Mahomes' physical conditioning and the level of treatment teams can offer to athletes in their recovery, he should be healthy enough to last the entire game against the Eagles.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback suffered a similar injury in the past. Mahomes sustained a high ankle sprain on his left ankle in 2019. He did not sit out any games due to the ankle issue, although he did miss a few games due to a dislocated kneecap later that season.

"I can move around better than I did two weeks ago. We'll see how much closer to 100 percent I can be on game day, but I can definitely walk around better," Mahomes said.

The Chiefs will be thrilled as long as he moves more fluidly than he did against the Cincinnati Bengals. Even though he was limited during the Chiefs' 23-20 victory, he still managed to complete 29 of his 43 throws for 326 yards and two scores. Against a formidable Philadelphia Eagles defense, he will need to produce better numbers if the Chiefs are to secure their second Super Bowl title in five years.
