Tyreek Hill sent shockwaves to the NFL world on Sunday, right after the Miami Dolphins' 32-20 loss to the New York Jets that ended their season. The Dolphins would be eliminated from playoff contention even with a win, but the defeat left a sour taste in their mouths to close the year.

But Hill had a message to send. Speaking with reporters right after the game, the wide receiver stated that "he was out" of the team following a hugely disappointing season. It was the first year of his career when he played a full season but did not cross the 1,000-yard mark.

Hill made his wish public, but moving to another franchise isn't going to be an easy task. Let's explore his current situation:

Is Tyreek Hill a free agent in 2025?

Before the 2024 season, Hill restructured his contract with the franchise, but in doing so, he also signed a contract extension, which had three years and cost $90 million for the Dolphins.

With the new deal, he has two years left on his contract, so another team would have to trade for him. He's not a free agent and will not be available on the market when the new league year starts in March.

It's worth noting that being traded is nothing new in his career. The receiver negotiated a contract extension with the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2021 season, but it quickly became clear that the two sides would not reach an agreement. As a result, he joined the Miami Dolphins via trade during the 2022 offseason.

Can the Dolphins trade Tyreek Hill?

Financially speaking, Miami would hurt by making a trade during the 2025 offseason.

According to Spotrac, a website specializing in player contracts, he has a $28.6 million cap hit in 2025. The Dolphins would endure $28.2 million in dead cap if they decide to trade him in the upcoming months, unless they make the deal with a designation with post-June 1.

If they do apply this designation, Miami would then endure $12.72 million in dead cap in 2025 and $15.56 in 2026, while also opening $15.9 million in cap space for the 2025 season. Of course, doing these deals would erase all of his cap hits in 2026 and also the void years for the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

They can do this deal, but unless he pushes the situation as much as he can, financially speaking, the Dolphins have no reason to trade their superstar.
