New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo said Wednesday that wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk is in concussion protocol. The rookie wideout is unlikely to play in Sunday's game against the New York Jets.
Polk suffered another blow following an unimpressive start to his professional career when he sustained a head injury during Week 7's defeat at the hands of the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.
Polk has not been officially declared out for the Week 8 matchup against the Jets, but NFL players who have a concussion typically miss the next game.
Moreover, players who are diagnosed with a concussion are not allowed to play in another game until they have completed the protocol, though there is no defined timeframe for them to complete it.

Sometimes, as was the case lately with Marvin Harrison Jr. of the Arizona Cardinals, the procedure only takes a few days. In other cases, players could experience symptoms like headaches for weeks following the injury.
Ja'Lynn Polk has caught 10 passes on 26 targets for 78 yards and a touchdown in seven games. Drops have been a particular problem for him in the early going of his NFL career.
Ja'Lynn Polk injury update: What happened to the Patriots WR?
In the second half of the New England Patriots' Week 7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, rookie quarterback Drake Maye delivered a pass intended for wide receiver Ja'Lynn Polk. However, Polk was unable to catch the throw due to the speed and fell, landing heavily on the turf.
The second-round draft pick had to leave the field and it was later revealed that he suffered a head injury. Although he was initially marked as questionable to return, he eventually couldn't make a comeback.
Polk was the target of three passes before he was injured but he was unable to catch any of them; two of the throws struck his hands before being intercepted by opposing defenders.
Jerod Mayo urged Polk to focus better, stressing the need for him to play a bigger role in subsequent games.
Ja'Lynn Polk entering the league's concussion protocol has raised doubts about his availability for Week 8.
