Jahmyr Gibbs is an American professional football running back for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League. A First-Team All-American selection, Gibbs was a three-star recruit and had offers from programs like Michigan, Texas A&M, and North Carolina. However, choosing to stick close to home, he would commit to Georgia Tech for his collegiate career. A strong senior year saw his rating go further up to four stars. Despite additional offers from Florida, Georgia, and Alabama, Gibbs chose to stick with his pick of Georgia Tech. However, he would stick with the Yellowjackets for just two seasons. During those two years, he would showcase some potential, though a majority of his performance would count in the solid, not spectacular range. His first game, however, was one for the ages. Finishing with over 200 total yards and two touchdowns to boot, Gibbs’ arrival was nothing short of spectacular. For the season, he would finish with over 400 yards rushing as well as a little over 300 yards receiving. In his second year, he would improve both those numbers by a significant margin. As a rusher, he was far more effective, totaling nearly 750 yards while adding 450+ yards as a receiving threat.

That performance put him in the national spotlight, earning second-team All-American as well as First-team All-ACC honors. However, Gibbs would enter the transfer portal and move to the University of Alabama for his final collegiate season. During his lone season for the Crimson Tide, Gibbs was sensational. During a three-week-long dominant stretch, he would total 206, 154, and 104 rushing yards consecutively. For the year, his overall numbers were stellar. As a rusher alone, he would aggregate close to 1,000 yards while adding over 400 more as a receiver.

Gibbs had a 40-yard dash time of 4.36 seconds. Jahmyr Gibbs showcased his exceptional speed by clocking an official 40-yard dash time of 4.36 seconds at the 2023 NFL Combine. This impressive performance was the second-fastest among running backs, only behind Texas A&M's Devon Achane, and tied for the seventh-fastest overall at the combine. At 5’9” and barely 210 lbs, questions about his size and strength translating to the NFL, and in particular the running back position’s physicality was obvious. However, his 40-yard dash put any doubts or queries out of Detroit’s mind. As a result, with the 12th pick in the draft, they would select Jahmyr Gibbs as an addition to their running back core.

Due to a spectacular year at Alabama, the dye was ready to be cast on Gibbs as one of the better running backs in the league currently. For the Lions, it was the perfect opportunity to fill the one roster spot they were struggling mightily at. With a trade to acquire some current and future draft compensation, they rid their hands of D’Andre Swift. In his place, Jahmyr Gibbs was the perfect replacement.

In his first season, as the Detroit Lions have roared to a division title for the first team in decades, Gibbs has been an invaluable part of the core. While Jared Goff mans the quarterbacking position, Gibbs has been vital to the offense’s success with his timely carrying duties. For the season, despite starting in just 3 games, the 21-year-old has tallied over 900 yards with a game left to go. Along with his prowess with his feet, he has been exceptional as a receiver as well, totaling over 300 yards there as well.
