In today’s NFL, the passing game largely takes precedence over the running game in the offenses for many NFL franchises. As such, having a talented QB is only one of the key requirements in building a team that is a contender and capable of winning the Superbowl. Pass-heavy offenses need a deep room of Wide Receivers (WRs) to accurate make catches and deliver gains, while not making drops and remaining a threat to bypass the defense for explosive plays. Bennie ‘Jauan’ Jennings is the answer to the need for depth at the Wide Receiver position for the San Francisco 49ers. He has slowly established himself as the second WR option during his 3 years in the NFL with the 49ers. In his rookie season in 2021, he managed to start a game and appeared in 16 games across the season. He racked up 5 touchdowns across the span of the 2021 NFL season, in which the 49ers made it to the NFC Championship Game.
Jennings has continued to contribute to the 49ers success and make key plays and slot in wherever and whenever required, especially when the 49ers’ primary receiving options Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are hurt and/or having an off day. This was demonstrated by his performance in the 2023 NFL Divisional Round game against the Green Bay Packers, in which he racked up a gain of 61 yards on 5 receptions.
Jauan Jennings attended Blackman High School located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he began playing high school football as a quarterback. His performances earned him a four-star recruit rating.
Jauan Jennings College
Jauan Jennings attended the University of Tennessee from 2015-2019. He chose to remain in-state and play for the Tennessee Volunteers program in the SEC. He converted to playing as a wide receiver in college. Jennings had a very chaotic college career. Initially he was an instant contributor in his limited chances as a freshman, with his highlight play of the year actually being a 58-yard touchdown pass to his team’s QB, Joshua Dobbs against fierce rivals, the Florida Gators.
In his second season under HC Butch Jones, his offensive role expanded, as he racked up 580 receiving yards on 40 receptions, to go with 7 touchdowns for the year, several of them being highlight reel game winning catches. This positive momentum was halted in 2017, as Jennings suffered with a wrist injury that eventually caused him to medically redshirt the year.
This added another year of eligibility for Jennings to utilize under new HC Jeremy Pruitt. A solid year as a junior in 2018 laid the foundations for a breakout campaign as a Senior in 2019, as Jennings crossed the 950 receiving yards threshold, on 59 receptions and combined that with 8 receiving and 1 rushing touchdown. Following this, Jennings declared for the 2020 NFL Draft.
