Florida-born Jer’Zhan “Johnny” Newton played as a defensive tackle at Illinois. Newton has had an astonishing 2023 season. Newton finished the 2023 season with 52 total tackles among which 26 were solo. He received honors like Consensus All-American, Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year, and Smith-Brown Defensive Lineman of the Year. Moreover, Newton was also named in the first team All-Big Ten for the second consecutive time in 2023.

Newton has put up consistent numbers in the past three seasons of college football. He has averaged 53 tackles per season since 2021. The former Fighting Illini player attended Florida's Clearwater Central Catholic High School where he recorded 244 tackles and 24 sacks in his career. Before transferring to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, he had committed to play college football at the University of Maryland, College Park.

All things considered, Newton is a disruptive player. To surprise offensive linemen and maintain his gap, he uses his strength and sturdiness at the point of attack against the run. Additionally, he can make plays outside of his gap thanks to his remarkable combination of strength and athleticism, and he has little to no trouble getting off blocks. Newton was ranked first in terms of production score at the 2024 NFL Combine. Moreover, his overall score was 83 which is the second highest by a DT at the 2024 Combine Event.
