In 2016, Mixon performed exceptionally well and recorded over 1,000 rushing yards, securing 10 rushing touchdowns. He also contributed significantly with 37 receptions, 538 receiving yards, and 5 receiving touchdowns in 12 games. He earned a spot on the first-team All-Big 12 as well. He started all three seasons for the Freedom High School Falcons football team as a running back. As a sophomore, he gained 1,134 yards and 13 touchdowns in 171 carries. He gained 1,443 yards and 21 touchdowns on 201 carries in his junior year of football. On 226 carries, he gained 1,704 yards and 23 touchdowns in his final year of football.
