After serving his suspension, he made a comeback to the field and earned an opportunity to play during his redshirt freshman year. In 2015, he played in all 13 games, starting in four. He concluded the season with 753 rushing yards and secured seven rushing touchdowns, setting a career-high long carry at 66 yards. Additionally, he recorded 28 receptions, 356 receiving yards, and four receiving touchdowns.
In 2016, Mixon performed exceptionally well and recorded over 1,000 rushing yards, securing 10 rushing touchdowns. He also contributed significantly with 37 receptions, 538 receiving yards, and 5 receiving touchdowns in 12 games. He earned a spot on the first-team All-Big 12 as well. Additionally, in a 19-35 victory against Auburn during the Sugar Bowl, he recorded 91 rushing yards, securing two rushing touchdowns along with five receptions and an additional 89 receiving yards.

Mixon played basketball and football for the Falcons while attending Oakley, California's Freedom High School. He started all three seasons for the Freedom High School Falcons football team as a running back. As a sophomore, he gained 1,134 yards and 13 touchdowns in 171 carries. He gained 1,443 yards and 21 touchdowns on 201 carries in his junior year of football. On 226 carries, he gained 1,704 yards and 23 touchdowns in his final year of football.
