The Houston Texans improved to 2-0 on the season with their 19-13 Sunday Night Football victory over the Chicago Bears. However, they may have lost one of their most important offensive players to an injury during the contest.

Texans running back Joe Mixon had to leave the game on Sunday due to a right ankle injury. He appeared to be in significant discomfort, but he still managed to stand up on his own and was escorted to the medical tent.

Mixon was later spotted returning to the locker room to have his injury further assessed. Let's examine what happened to the RB below.

Joe Mixon injury update: What happened to the Texans' RB?

Many Texans fans were excited about the signing of running back Joe Mixon in the offseason, believing he would inject more energy into the team's backfield.

The Oklahoma product sustained an injury during the game against the Chicago Bears on Sunday night. Texans' supporters are now eagerly awaiting word on Mixon's condition ahead of Week 3.

Mixon was hit by Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards with 12 minutes left in the third quarter. The running back attempted to run past his first down marker, but Edwards stopped him by pulling him. Mixon then seemed to get his lower leg stuck beneath Edwards's frame.

Although Edwards' tackle seemed to be a hip-drop tackle—which the NFL outlawed earlier this year—the officials did not call anything. After being assessed in the blue tent, Mixon made his way back to the locker room.

The Texans declared that Mixon was questionable to return following his departure from the field. He rejoined the matchup after missing one series but eventually left before the next.

Now, it's unclear if Mixon's injury's after-effects would worsen during the week and jeopardize his availability for the encounter against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

Texans coach DeMeco Ryans informed reporters following the Week 2 game that Mixon's injury needed to be evaluated to determine its severity. After the matchup, the running back himself revealed on X that he had questioned the referee if Edwards' tackle on him was a hip-drop tackle, but the official had informed him that it wasn't.

Joe Mixon has performed admirably for the Texans this season

Joe Mixon scored a touchdown and gained 159 yards on 30 carries as the Texans defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the first week of regular season action. Before leaving the Week 2 contest, he followed that Week 1 effort with 36 total yards on nine touches.

The team's RB2 this season appears to be Dameon Pierce, albeit he missed the first two games because of a hamstring injury. Dare Ogunbuwale is on the Texans' RB depth chart, but it was Cam Akers who took Mixon's place in Week 2.
