John Harbaugh is a professional American football coach who is widely regarded as one of the best in the NFL. As of January 2025, he is the head coach for the Baltimore Ravens. He was born in Toledo, Ohio, U.S., on September 23, 1962.

John Harbaugh coached in college for around 13 years. He grew up in a football-loving family, where his father was also a coach and served as an assistant coach in college football for many years. John Harbaugh’s brother Jim Harbaugh is also a coach and he serves as the head coach for the Los Angeles Chargers. In 2024, Harbaugh entered his 17th season with the organization.

John Harbaugh’s Coaching Career

Western Michigan (1984–1987)

John Harbaugh's professional career as a coach started in 1984 when he joined Western Michigan University as their graduate assistant under his father.

Pittsburgh (1987)

After his three-year stint with Western Michigan, Harbaugh joined Pittsburgh as a tight ends coach.

Morehead State (1988)

Harbaugh signed with the Morehead State Eagles where he worked under head coach Bill Baldridge in the 1988 season according to Morehead State University.

Cincinnati (1989–1996)

From 1989 to 1996, Harbaugh served as the recruiting coordinator and also coached outside linebackers, running backs, tight ends, and special teams.

Indiana (1997)

Harbaugh also coached Indiana for one season as the defensive backs and special teams coordinator.

Philadelphia Eagles (1998–2007)

John Harbaugh served the Philadelphia Eagles in 1998 as their special teams coach at the University of Indiana. In 2005, Harbaugh was named as the assistant head coach of the Eagles and in 2007, which marked his last year with the Eagles he was their defensive backs coach. Harbaugh was never offered a permanent job as the head coach of the Eagles, So he decided to move on and joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2008 as their head coach.

Baltimore Ravens (2008–present)

In 2008, Harbaugh was hired by the Baltimore Ravens. Since Harbaugh joined the Ravens, he has elevated them to a new level under his guidance. They won the Super Bowl in 2012 and won two AFC North championships.
