Before his journey as a professional coach in the National Football League began, McDaniels played wide receiver with the John Carroll Blue Streaks football team at John Carroll University. His coaching career began in 2001 when he was hired by the New England Patriots as a personnel assistant. He also served as a defensive coaching assistant and was promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2004. During his stint with the Patriots, he won the Super Bowl four times.

In 2009, he joined the Denver Broncos and signed a four-year deal with them to become their head coach. After spending two seasons with them, he was fired from the team in 2011.

Mcdaniels then became the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams in January 2011, but after the Rams head coach was fired they did not hold McDaniels to his contract. He then returned to the New England Patriots as their offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the 2012 season. During his time with the Patriots, they won the Super Bowl title three times. In 2022, McDaniels was hired as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. He was fired by the Raiders for an underwhelming record of 9 wins and 16 losses in the regular season.
