Josh Mcdaniels is a professional American football coach who has worked as a head coach for the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders. His latest stint with the Las Vegas Raiders ended when he was fired by the team on October 31, 2023. He was born on April 22, 1976, in Canton, Ohio, United States of America. McDaniels has established himself as one of the most prolific coaches in the NFL, having experience of over a decade. During his tenure as a coach and offensive coordinator, he has seen incredible success, which is evident from the number of Super Bowl championships he has.

McDaniels went to college at John Carroll University. As a football player, he served as a wide receiver for a period of three years. While not much is spoken about his success as a player, it is interesting to notice that many of McDaniels’ teammates from college went on to become his colleagues and rivals in the NFL.

McDaniels kicked off his coaching career as a senior graduate assistant to the office of Nick Saban at Michigan State University. Entering higher stature in 2001, McDaniels was appointed the personnel assistant for the New England Patriots of the NFL. He stepped into a coaching role as defensive coaching assistant for a period of two years after which he was appointed as the quarterback coach. McDaniels’ success rate was so high that he won the Super Bowl 3 times out of 4 seasons. Following his success, McDaniels was made the team’s offensive coordinator in 2006.

In 2009, McDaniels made a move to the Denver Broncos as a Head Coach. The 2009 season started with a bang, resulting in a 6-0 record but the performance declined during the course of the season and the team finished the season with an 8-8 win-loss record. Midway through the 2010 NFL season, McDaniels was fired as Head Coach of the Broncos after failing to deliver positive results with the team.

After being fired by the Broncos, McDaniels served as offensive coordinator for the St. Luis Rams for a period of one year before returning to the Patriots in 2012 as the offensive coordinator. During his tenure, the Patriots were known to have the most dangerous offenses in the league. In his return to the Patriots, McDaniels won 3 more Super Bowl championships.

In 2022, McDaniels was hired to be the Head Coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. Despite having a fairly strong team, McDaniels was not able to generate much success and was fired subsequently after having a poor regular season win-loss record of 9-16.

Josh McDaniels Super Bowl Wins

Josh McDaniels has won 6 super bowls in his career.

In the capacity of Head Coach, McDaniels is known to have delivered negative results but as offensive coordinator, it would be an understatement to say that McDaniels has been successful. McDaniels has amassed 6 Super Bowl wins over his coaching career in the NFL. All 6 titles came from his coaching tenures with the New England Patriots. McDaniels’ first 3 title wins were very close games with each game being decided by a matter of 3 points as follows:

  1. Super Bowl XXXVI: New England Patriots 20 - 17 St. Louis Rams

  2. Super Bowl XXXVII: New England Patriots 32 - 29 Carolina Panthers

  3. Super Bowl XXXIX: New England Patriots 24 - 21 Philadelphia Eagles

McDaniels’ last 3 Super Bowl victories were more diversified in the score range. He was crucial in setting gameplay decisions and making the right calls to win games for the Patriots:

  1. Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots 28 - 24 Seattle Seahawks. The game is remembered for Malcolm Butler’s game-winning reception that helped the Patriots secure the win.

  2. Super Bowl LI: New England Patriots 34 - 28 Atlanta Falcons. This game is known for its unbelievable score turnaround. The Patriots came back from a deficit of 28 - 3 to win in overtime, marking this to be one of the most thrilling Super Bowl games.

  3. Super Bowl LIII: New England Patriots 13 - 3 Los Angeles Rams. This game, unlike all other titles, was considered to be an easier victory considering the score differential.

With the departure of Derek Carr from the Raiders and building the team around a new quarterback, the 2023 NFL season was supposed to be a point of establishment for McDaniels as a head coach. But sadly, that was not the case. The 2022 season saw the Raiders losing 11 games. This continued in the 2023 season till October end as the Raiders only registered 3 wins against 5 losses. As a result, the Raiders fired McDaniels on October 31, 2023 due to his poor performance record.
