Joshua Thomas McDaniels is an American football coach, who is well known for winning 6 superbowl titles. He recently served as the head coach for the Las Vegas Raiders in the National Football League (NFL). McDaniels was fired by the Raiders on October 31, 2023.

Born in Canton, Ohio, United States on April 22, 1978, McDaniels played football in the position of wide receiver during his University days. He was teammates with London Fletcher, Brian Polian, Jerry Schuplinski, Tom Telesco and Dave Ziegler. After his college football career, he chose to become a coach and train young players. He is notable for winning 6 Super Bowls namely Super Bowl XXXVI (2001 NFL season), Super Bowl XXXVIII (2003 NFL season), Super Bowl XXXIX (2004 NFL season), Super Bowl XLIX (2014 NFL season), Super Bowl LI (2016 NFL season) and Super Bowl LIII (2018 NFL season). He has become renowned for being a versatile offensive coordinator and winning 6 Super Bowl title. As a head coach, Josh McDaniels has received a win-loss record of 20-33 and a win percent of .377 in the regular season. However, he was fired due to an underwhelming stint in the 2023 season with the Raiders where he had a regular season record of 9-16.

Teams Coached by Josh McDaniels

Josh McDaniels has coached both college football teams and NFL teams in his career so far. Let’s have a look at all the teams he has coached.

College

This is where Josh McDaniels started his coaching career. He was a graduate assistant under head coach Nick Saban at Michigan State University in 1999. Working with the head coach, he helped the college football team not only win the Citrus Bowl but also post a record of 10-2.

New England Patriots

Josh McDaniels made his NFL debut with this team. He was brought in as a personal assistant for the head coach in 2001. Then from 2002-2004, he mainly helped improve the defense backs as a defense coaching assistant. In his tenure with the team, he also worked as a coach for the quarterbacks. He led the team to win three Super Bowls namely Super Bowl XXXVI (2001 NFL season), Super Bowl XXXVIII (2003 NFL season) and Super Bowl XXXIX (2004 NFL season).

After the 2004 NFL season, Josh McDaniels became the offensive coordinator of the time while also coaching the quarterbacks. He continued improving both the offense and the quarterbacks of the team. This led to the team scoring 589 points along with 75 touchdowns in the 2007 NFL season. Head coach Bill Belichick gave him a report about various ways to become a successful head coach which he considered to be his Bible. He coached and guided Matt Cassell and the offensive unit of the team after Tom Brady suffered from an injury during the 2008 NFL season. He departed from the team soon after.

Denver Broncos

This was Josh McDaniels’ first role as a head coach in the NFL. He came to the team in January 2009. He signed a 4-year contract worth $8 million with the team. In the 2009 NFL season, he led the team to win 6 games consecutively which included an overtime game against the New England Patriots. Unfortunately, they lost the next 4 games and their chances at a playoff was broken after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated them in the last game of the season. He also faced controversy regarding his benching of Brandon Marshall. The team finished the season with a win-loss record of 8-8.

His second season as a head coach for the team resulted in The Denver Broncos achieving a win-loss record of 3-9. After this poor performance, he was removed from the team on December 6, 2010.

During his tenure with the team, he also had to deal with the videotaping scandal. However, it was soon revealed that McDaniels was not aware of the situation at all. Nevertheless, he was fined by the NFL because he did not report about the incident to the head office once he got to know about it. It also became another reason for his removal from the team.

St. Louis Rams

Josh McDaniels next joined the St.Louis Rams as an offensive coordinator and served under head coach Steve Spagunolo in 2011. He stayed with the team for the season improving the offensive position for the team. However, after the 2011 NFL season was over, head coach Steve Spagunolo was fired from the team. For Josh McDaniels, he was allowed to leave despite being on contract with the team for the 2012 NFL season.

New England Patriots

Josh McDaniels returned to the New England Patriots in 2012. Initially, he worked as the offensive assistant coach for the 2011 NFL playoffs but was changed to an offensive coordinator and a quarterbacks coach in the 2012 NFL season. He coached and improved both the offensive and the quarterbacks of the team until eventually, they won the Super Bowl XLIX (2014 NFL season) against the Seattle Seahawks. He also led the team to win the Super Bowl LI (2016 NFL season) against the Atlanta Falcons.

After the Super Bowl LII (2017 NFL season), the Indianapolis Colts announced Josh McDaniels as their head coach. However, he refused the position and chose to stay with the New England Patriots. He eventually led the team to win Super Bowl LIII (2018 NFL season) against the Los Angeles Rams. Throughout his two tenures with the New England Patriots, he has coached and developed players like Tom Brady, Sony Michel, Cam Newton, Rob Gronkowski, Brandin Cooks and many other notable footballers. Alongside 6 Super Bowl Championships, he also helped the team achieve 8 conference crowns and 14 division titles.

Las Vegas Raiders

Josh McDaniels then joined the Las Vegas Raiders as the head coach in 2022. He worked and improved players like Josh Jacobs and Davante Adams. He helped both the rusher and the receiver of the team achieve the 1500-yard mark in the season. Moreover, he has also improved the offensive unit that resulted in rank 5 and the second highest in the team’s history since 2001. He was fired from the head coach position of the Las Vegas Raiders due to an underwhelming regular season win-loss record of 9-16.
