Joshua Dobbs Contract

Last Modified Mar 22, 2024 07:22 GMT

A permanent journeyman in the NFL, Joshua Dobbs has been bouncing around the league since being drafted in 2017. In the 2024 season, Dobbs will be the backup to Brock Purdy with the San Franciso 49ers having signed a one-year deal in March 2024. He spent the 2023 NFL season playing first for the Arizona Cardinals and then the second half of the season with the Minnesota Vikings.

Despite his whirlwind journey to get to this stage in the NFL, he is undeniably here. But, for the Alpharetta, Georgia native, the journey began as more of a student than an athlete. As a high schooler, he showed some promise and was ready to make his way to Arizona State University. But, at the last moment, he instead chose to attend the University of Tennessee for his college days.

During his 4 years at Tennessee, Dobbs would be more known for his academic excellence than on-field performances. After serving in a backup role for his first two years, he made his place as a starter. Over the next two years, he would hover in the 2,000s for total passing yards while adding over 600 yards rushing each year. But, it was his perfect 4.0 GPA as an aerospace engineering major that was instead the story coming out of college. Yet, his production had been solid enough to warrant a look in the 2017 NFL Draft.

After projections for him varied from the second to the fifth round, there was uncertainty about where Dobbs would get selected. With the 135th pick, the Pittsburgh Steelers would finally bite the bullet and pair him with former teammate Cameron Sutton.

During his entire tenure, Dobbs spent brief portions of his career with various teams. However, he was in a backup role for most organizations and a replacement for often injured or suspended quarterbacks, like DeShaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns.
