The New England Patriots fans of the past decade or so have a lot of names that they can be extremely proud of when it comes to their teams. Of which Julian Edelman is one such name for sure. The former wide receiver who was drafted by the Patriots in 2009, spent all twelve years of his career with the storied franchise. Not to mention he was one of the important cogs in the team that won three Super Bowls between 2014 and 2018.
Edelman may have been one of the shorter wide receivers to have played the game, but that didn’t stop him from having a long and fruitful career in this tough league. Edelman’s football story is quite enthralling given the fact that he always played as a quarterback for his high school and college teams. Knowing that he lacked the skill to become a quarterback in the NFL, Edelman decided to work on playing other positions with a chance of getting drafted. And as they say, the rest is history as the former quarterback turned into an all-time great wide receiver earning himself three Championship rings.
Julian Edelman's life after the NFL
During the midway part of the 2020 NFL season, the versatile player suffered a knee injury that forced him to sit out the entire remaining season. By this stage of his career, he was already suffering from chronic knee problems and his body was sending him signals that it was time to quit. Announcing his retirement in April 2021, he left the game of football after twelve long years.
After retiring from football on the field, Julian chose to continue his association with the game he loves so dearly off the field. He started working for ‘Inside the NFL’ as one of the hosts and took on a completely different avenue. He took his new job very seriously and was even nominated for an Emmy after his first year.
Apart from his hosting job, he is also very busy with his own podcast ‘Games with Names’ which he co-hosts with comedian Sam Morril. The podcast aims to dive into the history of the sport and dig up some classic matches that took place back in the day. They are joined on the show by players, coaches, and celebrity fans who witnessed the great games and discuss insights and stories never heard before. All in all, it is safe to say that the former wide receiver is not missing life too much on the field with all that he has going off of it.
Julian Edelman's NFL career
The outstanding receiver that he turned into after playing so much competitive football at the quarterback position is truly an outstanding achievement. Changing positions, especially at the highest level of the games requires not only courage but also a strong mental self-belief to pull it off. And in spite of Edelman being able to succeed in the long run, it was not an easy start by any means.
In fact, his first four years in the league did not see much production from his end as a receiver. He was, however, given more responsibility as a kick returner as well. At this stage it is important to talk about his versatility in the game as in 2011 with a depleted secondary, the Patriots put him on the field as a defensive back. He would go on to feature in multiple games as a cornerback throughout the year.
2013 saw Edelman truly hit the ground running hard and was rewarded with a starting role in the team from there onwards. He also reached his first 1,000 plus yards in a season. Consequently, his production in the postseason also went up from 2013 onwards and his three best playoff seasons all resulted in three Super Bowl victories for the Patriots. To cap off a glittering career, he was even named the MVP of Super Bowl LIII.
