The Chiefs and the Bengals renewed their rivalry in a Week 2 matchup as Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes set about trying to throw an early marker for the season by defeating an opposition that is expected to compete with them for the AFC crown.

The Bengals were coming off of a shock upset in Week 1 when they struggled on offense and were defeated at home by the New England Patriots. Facing the reigning Super Bowl champions was a tough way to get their record back to 0.500.

The Chiefs won their opening match against the Baltimore Ravens. After defeating another AFC contender last week, they were looking to win their second game too, and preserve their 100 percent record.

Here is how the action went down.

Chiefs vs. Bengals game summary

The Bengals and the Chiefs, in the Joe Burrow and Patrick Mahomes era, have always had close games with the difference in final scores just being a single score. The same thing happened here.

Both teams exchanged a couple of field goals in the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Bengals pulled away a bit. Both Patrick Mahomes and Joe Burrow led their teams on touchdown drives but Cincinnati scored a couple of field goals too to take a six-point lead into the break. Kansas City was hurt by their quarterback throwing the first of his interceptions.

But the Chiefs being the Chiefs, they are not repeat Super Bowl champions for no reason. They scored a defensive touchdown in the third quarter to set us off, but the Bengals came back with a score of their own. But the extra point was missed and it would become the point of difference when the game ended.

In the fourth quarter, Cincinnati had a field goal but Kansas City scored three to win it. The final kick came with time expiring. They should not have had the opportunity after they were pegged back to 4-and-16 but a defensive pass interference penalty brought the Chiefs into field goal range. With the Bengals out of timeouts, they ran the ball a few times to set up a walk-off attempt by Harrison Butker.

With that, Joe Burrow now has to dig the Bengals out of a 0-2 hole, while Patrick Mahomes has led his team to a 2-0 start against two AFC favorites as they target a threepeat.
