The Chargers and the Chiefs faced off in Los Angeles and it had an early top-of-the-table feel to it. Kansas City has dominated the AFC West and the league for nearly half a decade but both teams got off to a 2-0 start to begin the 2024 NFL season.
Jim Harbaugh has overseen some positive changes after becoming the head coach of the Chargers this year but he faced his first reverse against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3 to come into this match with a 2-1 record. Meanwhile, the Chiefs had suffered some doubtful moments of their own but had answered them, as they have done for the last two years, to reach a perfect 3-0 record.
Los Angeles knew that getting a win would tie the two franchises atop the AFC West with a 3-1 record and also send a message that they are able to hang around with the best team in the league. This is how the action went down.

Chiefs vs. Chargers game summary
The first quarter of this game began slowly for the Chiefs, as it has been many times this season. Justin Herbert marched the Chargers down the field on their opening drive, after a fumble by Kansas City running back Carson Steele, and connected with Ladd McConkey for a touchdown deep in the end zone. A conversion gave Los Angeles a 7-0 lead.
To whittle that down, Patrick Mahomes tried a pass over the top but threw an interception. It led to a return deep with Kansas City territory and in the melee trying to stop the defender from gaining the yards, the quarterback knocked into his wide receiver Rashee Rice, who injured his knee and did not return to the game. A field goal following the turnover made the score 10-0 for the Chargers in the first quarter.
But the Chiefs never lie down and came back in the second quarter. It was a spectacular pass by Patrick Mahomes to Xavier Worthy who showed his speed and ran straight through the defense for a touchdown of more than 50 yards. They also had a chance to tie the score at the end of the first half, but a 65-yard attempt was pulled short by kicker Harrison Butker.
However, he would have his chance again in the second half as he converted a field goal in the third quarter to tie the game at 10-10. This was right after Los Angeles kicker Cameron Dicker had missed a field goal attempt of his own after pulling it wide.
In the fourth quarter, the Chiefs defense kept the Chargers offense in check and Patrick Mahomes took advantage of that. A long pass to Noah Gray got a drive going and eventually, it led to a Samaje Perine touchdown. It made the score 17-10 and that is how the game ended.
