The Chiefs and the Steelers got the penultimate week of the 2024 NFL season going with a mouthwatering game at lunchtime on Christmas Day. Both teams had already made it to the playoff, but that didn't mean that nothing was riding on the game.
Kansas City had a 14-1 record coming into Week 16 and knew another win would guarantee them the top seed in the AFC and the Wild Card Bye. With the Buffalo Bills having a 12-3 record, a win would put the Chiefs out of their reach.
For Pittsburgh, the 34-17 loss to Baltimore last week means that they are tied with the Ravens atop the AFC North with a 10-5 record. A victory here would give them a lead and put pressure on Lamar Jackson and company to get a result against the Texans later today.
With so much riding on this game between two high-quality teams, this is how the action went down.

Chiefs vs. Steelers game summary
The Chiefs started in a hurry and had the Pittsburgh crowd hushed in the first quarter. The Kansas City defense set the tone with a three-and-out and Patrick Mahomes responded with a touchdown drive. A pass to Xavier Worthy made the score 6-0, but an unsportsmanlike conduct on the wide receiver pushed the one-point conversion back, which Harrison Butker missed.
After the Steelers punted again, the Chiefs made them pay once more. Another possession ended with Patrick Mahomes' 244th career touchdown pass. That equals Peyton Manning as the most in a player's first eight years in the league, which is even more impressive since the Kansas City star was a backup in his first year. That made the score 13-0.
The Steelers thought they had a response but an offensive holding penalty ruled out a rushing touchdown. Russell Wilson threw a pick on the next snap and that fizzled out. Thankfully for the home fans, the Pittsburgh defense forced a punt from the visiting team on the next possession. That allowed the hosts to mount a mini-comeback with the Steelers quarterback rolling back the years to scramble into the endzone to make it 13-7.
Three punts by either team followed as defenses made their presence felt and that is how it finished at the break. Kansas City and Pittsburgh came back after halftime and exchanged a couple of field goals to make it 16-10. However, it was after that the visitors showed their championship caliber and pulled ahead.
First, the Chiefs marched down 77 yards, and Kareem Hunt ran into the endzone to make it 22-10 to begin the fourth quarter. The two-point conversion failed but it did not matter as Pat Freiermuth fumbled the ball on the next drive to allow Kansas City to score again. Patrick Mahomes threw to Travis Kelce as the two Chiefs' stars connected to make it 29-10.
With that score, the quarterback cemented himself as the most productive touchdown thrower in the first eight years of their career. The tight end made franchise history by passing the legendary Tony Gonzalez for the most touchdown catches.
The Steelers tried to come back gamely but turned it on downs in the next drive. That pretty much ended any fight they had in them because when they got the ball back next after a Chiefs' punt, they decided to kick the ball away on a 4th-and-2. It was an indication that they had downed their tools. Kansas City, meanwhile, are the top seed in the AFC yet again.
