The last time the Chiefs and the 49ers met, they were fighting to be crowned Super Bowl champions to conclude the 2023 season. Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid lifted the trophy then as Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdy went home empty-handed.
Both franchises were favorites to replicate their success again in 2024. The Chiefs have kept their end of the bargain and entered this game with a 5-0 record. Smart defense has kept them in games and Patrick Mahomes has managed to get the offense working efficiently even with their top receivers and running backs injured.
They were the only organization with a perfect record going into this matchup after the Vikings lost to the Lions earlier in the day.
While Kansas City have carried on as they mean business, the 49ers have struggled and came into the match with a 3-3 record. For them, this match was more than getting some measure of revenge for the Super Bowl.

Chiefs vs. 49ers game summary
The Chiefs won this game with a flourish and are now 6-0 for the season. They are the last undefeated team in the NFL. While Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy were the names everyone was keeping an eye on, both defenses dominated.
That became evident right from the start. The 49ers punted on their first drive and the Chiefs turned it over on downs on their first go on offense. A couple of interceptions followed and then the two teams exchanged punts. San Francisco finally broke the deadlock towards the end of the first quarter with a field goal.
That was the wake-up call Kansas City needed. On the next drive, they got a touchdown when Kareem Hunt rushed from close range. After the 49ers punted on the next drive, Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs down the field again. It led to Hunt getting his second touchdown. During the two-minute warning for the first half, Brock Purdy finally got a drive going and took them down the field but the 49ers had to settle for a field goal to head into the break down 14-6.
The third quarter began brightly for the 49ers. After the defense got a pick, the offense drove down the field to get a touchdown with Brock Purdy finishing a short run into the endzone. The conversion was missed to make the score 14-12 at that point. The defense again did well to force Kansas City into a punt in the next drive but San Francisco squandered that opportunity with an interception.
That returned the ball to Patrick Mahomes and he got a score on the ground. With the score now 21-12, the 49ers needed something special. They drove down the field but catastrophe struck when Brock Purdy was intercepted again, this time in the endzone. This was the turning point as the Chiefs went down the other end and added another touchdown through Mecole Hardman to make it 28-12.
With the clock running down, San Francisco now needed two touchdowns with a couple of two-point conversions and an onside kick in between. They did the first part as Brock Purdy atoned somewhat for his previous error and rushed in from close range to make the score 28-18. But they could not get two points following that and it meant the Chiefs were out of sight.
