Jimmy Garoppolo will enter the 2023 NFL offseason as an unrestricted free agent. His contract with the San Francisco 49ers expired at the conclusion of the season. He was a free agent last offseason as well, but rejoined the 49ers on a one-year contract. He enters a similar situation this year with his future in jeopardy.

The 49ers were recently eliminated from the playoffs when they were defeated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship game, just one win shy of making a Super Bowl appearance. The franchise held a news conference following the loss to discuss some of the plans for the offseason, including critical roster decisions.

Among those who answered questions from the media were coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch. One reporter asked if there was any chance that Jimmy Garoppolo would again return to the team. Shanahan answered the question simply and definitively:

"No. I don't see any scenario of that."

Garoppolo has spent the last six years with the organization after spending the first three seasons of his career with the New England Patriots. Garoppolo found mixed success as the 49ers starting quarterback, highlighted by a Super Bowl appearance. They were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Why are the San Francisco 49ers moving on from Jimmy Garoppolo?

Jimmy Garoppolo will look for new opportunities during the NFL offseason to join a team where he can be the starting quarterback once again. His time in that position with the San Francisco 49ers has come to an end. This already happened a year ago, but circumstances have changed. While the 49ers brought him back on a one-year contract, it was to be a backup for Trey Lance.

Garoppolo only got another opportunity to be the starter when Lance suffered a season-ending injury. He then suffered a season-ending injury of his own, opening the door for rookie and seventh-round pick Brock Purdy to unexpectedly get a shot at the job. Purdy made the most of his opportunity, going undefeated in the regular season and winning two playoff games.

The success of Purdy, in combination with a commitment to developing Lance's talent, leaves no room for Garoppolo on the 49ers' depth chart. It's unclear which of the two young quarterbacks will open the season as the starter (although Purdy may be out after surgery), but it appears the 49ers will move on from Garoppolo after six years.
