Ladd McConkey Chargers contract: How much will rookie earn in historic deal?

Ladd McConkey made NFL history on Monday. The wideout signed a record four-year, $10 million contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, to become the highest-paid rookie in the league.

As per Spotrac, McConkey will receive $4.089 million as a signing bonus. His contract equates to a $2.5 million annual average salary.

McConkey's deal surpassed the four-year, $9.465 million rookie contract the Detroit Lions gave tight end Sam LaPorta last year. Coincidently, LaPorta was also picked No. 34 pick in the 2023 NFL draft.

McConkey has garnered rave reviews at the team's minicamp and reports suggest the Los Angeles outfit was quite happy to offer the rookie the blockbuster deal.

Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz spoke via the team’s official website about how they scouted McConkey and why Los Angeles traded up for the player:

“He [McConkey] was a guy that we targeted,” Hortiz said. “He was a guy all the scouts targeted, all the scouts looked at it and all the scouts and coaches loved.”

Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert also waxed lyrical on McConkey and said he is building quite a rapport with the wideout:

"It's like he [McConkey] has been a four or five-year vet," Herbert said. "He understands the game. He understands leverage. He's a smart player, and he's very athletic. I'm really looking forward to getting him the ball."

There is a possibility that McConkey might be integrated as a starter for the Chargers in his rookie season.
